Five things I am Grateful for

I believe that everyone has things that they are grateful for in their life. Some people may grateful for the talents they have, for being sport player, for having new ipad, for the challenge they met in life, for the rights and freedom, etc. Different people have different ways of thinking, different feeling, different things that come through their life; so things that they are grateful for might be different also. For me, five things I am grateful for in my life are my family, my friends, my Blackberry, being vegetarian, and be learning in an international school.

Family is the first thing I am grateful for. They are the most important thing in my life. I am thankful to be the daughter of my two adorable parents. If there are no them, there will not be me. They always are my advisers when I need help, they lead me to the right way, they give the best thing to me, and they always are there for me. My naughty sister and brother who can make me smile on the day that I am bored. And also my aunt, uncle and grandmother who always take care of me and love me so much. I love my family and I am really happy to be live in such a wonderful family like this.

Second thing that I am grateful for is my friends who always fill my life with brightness and make it meaningful. When I feel lonely, they make my day colorful and make me know that I am not alone. On the day that I am down, they light up the darkness and make me laugh. They play, they tell stories, they chat, and they make me smile every day. To having them in my life, it’s one of the very amazing things.

I am also grateful for my cell phone, Blackberry. It makes me easy to contact with my family, my friends, and other people. It’s just like part of my life. I can chat with my best friends whenever I miss them. I can call my parents when they are not at home, I can talk to my cousins who live in China, etc. Blackberry makes me feel that I am living close to the person who actually lives far away. It also makes my life a lot easier and comfortable. I couldn’t imagine how I would live without it. So I am grateful for having a Blackberry of my own.

Being a vegetarian is also one thing that I am grateful for. I feel sad for those animals that were killed for our food. although that there are still many people eating meat today, but I feel happy every time when I choose to eat vegetable instead of eating meat, because at least I am not the one that causing them to be killed. I think that everyone has the right to live their own life, including animals; because they are also living creature and they have feelings. Being vegetarian for 5 years is one of the things that I really grateful for.

And the last thing that I am grateful for is be learning in an international school. There are many children who are dreaming to learn in an international school, but couldn’t get that opportunity. There are also kids who didn’t even have chance to be in school.  I must be happy that I have the chance to be in the international school, and thanks to my parents that they choose the best school for me and my future. I feel that I am lucky that I can be in this school where I can learn many things, getting much knowledge, and also meet many foreign friends.

These five things are the things that I am grateful for in my life. They are important to me, they make my life wonderful and feel so meaningful. I would like to say thank you to my family and friends who brought those nice and lovely things to my life, and make my world bright.

My greatest Strength and Weakness

I believe that everyone has their own strength and weakness. Some might good at things that others can’t do, like being able to learn things fast, having self-confident, good at time management, etc. Some may have their weak sides that they would like to improve more.  And I think being able to recognize your own strength and weakness is a good thing, whether it is positive abilities that could help you achieve your goals or negative personal areas that need to be improved. Some people may feel upset to they know their own weakness, but if we think in a positive way, to know the negative things you have could help you to improve and overcome those weakness. I also have my own strength and weakness. My strengths are hard working, patient, optimistic, and respectful. While my weakness are public speaking, shy, and always getting to serious.

My greatest strength is being a hard working person; I usually have a strong ability to focus on the works assigned to me. I wouldn’t play or doing other things until I finish my works. I’m also being a well-organizer. I use to list down things I have to do and prioritize what is most important to least important. In doing this, it makes me become more organized. I am also an optimistic person as well. I use to see things in a positive way, because that could make me happier. For example when I did mistake or done anything wrong, of course I will get sad but I will always encourage myself by telling that I should learn from the mistake I had did, and understand it, so that next time I wouldn’t make the same mistake again. Or when I didn’t get things that I want, I will always try to think positive by telling myself that there are still many other people around world who doesn’t even have money to buy foods to eat or clothes to wear. So I should be happy that at least I got more things than those people. By being a positive thinker, you could be happier and understand things better. The last strength that I would talk about is respectful. Whether you are a student or working man, there is time when you have to work in a group with other people. And I think having respectful is an important thing. I can say that I am always respecting others for what they think, what they said, and what they believe. Although some time I may disagree or don’t believe in what they said, but I still respect them, because I think that different people have different way of thinking and different opinion.

I also have my weakness as well. One of my greatest weakness is public speaking. I always get nervous when I have to present in front of the class no matter how prepare I am. When I saw those people who could give a really good presentation, I feel so appreciate them and want to be like them. Now I am trying to improve my presentation skill, therefore in the future in can give a good presentation in front of many people. I second weakness is being shy. Sometime I am too shy to ask question in the class, and I know that it’s not a good thing. I know that when you don’t understand things you should ask, so that you can learn more. Now I trying to fight with this fear and I hope that I could overcome this weakness. And my last weakness is being too serious. I mostly get serious in doing works, especially when there are many assignments. I would always want to do things better and better, and make it the best; therefore sometime I am getting too much pressure and finish the work slower. I think I should be more relax and not getting to much stress.

To know what are your strength and weakness is good things. It helps you to understand and improve yourself more. After knowing your strong side, knowing what you are good at, you should be proud and keep it up, so that it will be with you forever. And the same as weakness don’t feel sad after recognize them, but try to fix them and overcome with those weaknesses. It’s good to know the weak side now, so that you could have time to improve it and make it better.

My most embarrassing experience

I think we all have experienced an embarrassing moments in our life such as falling down in front of many people, shuttering when teacher ask the questions and can’t answer, forgot lines in the middle of plays, call someone wrong name, etc. These moments might make your friends, your classmates, or many other people laugh at you, and make you ashamed with the things you have done, but sometime when you look back at these moments, I think it’s just the funny stories in your life which could make your life more colorful. For me, I also have embarrassing experiences in my life.

The first thing that make me so embarrassed is playing wrong notes during the piano show. I had learned piano since I was in grade 1 until grade 5 I had stop learning it. This embarrassing moment was happen when I was in grade 4. In my piano school, every year there will be a piano performance for the selected students to perform a song. And I got selected. After I knew that I have to perform on the next two weeks, I was practice so hard everyday. Then after practicing for only 5 days, I feel that I already could play the song so well, therefore I decided to relax and stop practicing. I was relaxing so much that I forgot I had to perform that day. when the show was almost started, my piano teacher told me that I was the first one to perform. And I was shocked, like why do I have to be the first?! I was so nervous that I couldn’t remember every notes that I had practiced. When it’s the time that I have to start perform. My hands were shaking and I couldn’t play the song. My face turned red and I could feel that it was hot. And finally, I couldn’t continued play the piano, so I just stop and walked down the stage. And I think this is one of the embarrassing experiences I have in my life.

My second embarrassing experience was when I was talking alone in the shopping mall. On that day, I went shopping, watched a movie, with 2 of my friends. After we finished watching the movie, we were walking around and chatting all the way. Then when we come to a clothing shops, my friends were very interested in those clothes, but I am so hungry at that time, so I told them to go buy something eat and then come back later. First I thought that they were walking behind me, so I just talked with them while we were walking to buy some ice-cream, but when I came to the ice-cream, that was time when I realized that they hadn’t follow me at all. And I talking alone all the way from the clothes shop to the ice-cream shop, and when I looked around, I could see that everyone was looking at me. That’s another thing that make me feel is embarrassed.

There are still some others embarrassing moments in my life, sometime it could make you smile when you look back at those things, but sometime you could still feel embarrassed when you think back, like my piano show, that’s was really embarrassing for me.

Short Story “Becky’s Beauty”

Once upon a time, there are 2 best friends name Jane and Becky living in the town. Jane is a daughter of a millionaire, her family is very wealthy. Her parents take care of her very well and always get her everything she wants. Jane’s life is full of happiness just like a princess. While Becky needs to work hard everyday, because her family is poor. She has many responsibility to take care, whether it’s house works or her school work. Although her life is very tough compare to her friend Jane, but she still satisfied with what she had, and never get jealous of her friend.

Jane’s parents always tell her to keep in mind that they are the richest family in the town. They teach her to be arrogant and look down on the poor. On the other hand, Becky always been taught to be respect and generous to other people, no matter how rich or poor they are. Her parents always tell her that even though a person is poor, but a person can still be beautiful at heart.

One day, in a bright morning, Jane and Becky go to jogging in the garden. After they had run for an hour, they decide to take a break under the tree. Then they bring out some food to eat while they are sitting. Just a few minute, a gray-haired man with a torn shirt comes and sit down beside them watching them eating. Jane got really angry with the action of the gray-haired man. She then shouts at him and tell him to move away. After finish the food, Jane feels so tired so she take a nap under the tree. When Becky saw her friend asleep, she takes some of her foods and gives them to the gray-haired man who is sitting far away in the other side of the tree. She sit down and talk with him like he is one of her relatives. The gray-haired man feels appreciate the kindness and the inner beauty Becky has. After talking for a while, Becky told the gray-haired man that she needs to go now. Before Becky is leaving, the man gives her a magic crystal ball and tells her that it will makes her dream come true.

When Becky back to home, she quickly take out the magic crystal ball. She wonder if what the gray-haired man had told is true. Therefore she close her eyes and starts to make a wish, “I wish that I could have a huge and beautiful house like a castle for my family to live”. In the blink of an eye, the old house that she had been live turn into a huge beautiful castle. She thanks to the magic crystal ball that the grey-haired man had gave her. And thereafter, Becky and her family live happily forever.

Pea Respiration

Purpose

  • respiration is releasing energy from sugar molecule. This experiment will prove that living things need respiration, while non-living things don’t. Respiration is important to al living things because it break down glucose so that energy can supple the body. We need to do respiration continuously to release the energy that allow our heart to beat, etc. without respiration living things will die.

Hypothesis

  • I think living peas will suck more color than the non-living peas and the paper ball since it’s living thing. The dead peas and paper ball don’t suck the color because non-living thing wouldn’t need respiration.

Equipment

  • Peas
  • 3 boiling tube
  • Rubber stocker with a hole
  • Ink
  • Micro wave
  • Potassium hydroxide(KOH)
  • 3 Elastic tube
  • 6 cotton
  • Tweezers
  • Goggle
  • Lab coat
  • Water
  • Timer
  • Ruler
  • Dropper

Analysis

  • To improve the experiment, we could’ve make sure that the boiling tube was close properly with the rubber stocker, so that the water won’t get in. This might help us to have a more accurate results.
  • We should make sure that the timer was start at the exact time when the boiling tube get into the water, and stop at the exact time you want such as 5 mins or 10 mins. This could be another way to help us improve our experiment.
  • When we were grouping the peas, we should’ve make sure that the peas were in similar sizes and not too different. Some of our peas were too big and too small, that’s why our results were not so good. If we have been more careful, we might get a better results.
  • Another mistake that our group had found is that the cotton doesn’t fit the boiling tube because it was too small. We should get the bigger cotton to fit the boiling tube exactly. This might make the result more accurate.

Conclusion

  • After finish doing the experiment, I can prove that only living things need respiration. From the experiment, we could see that the living peas suck the color into the boiling tube 2cm/300secs which is 0.0067 cm/sec, while the dead peas suck the color into the boiling tube only 1cm/300secs which is 0.003 cm/sec, and the paper ball did not suck any color which is 0 cm/sec. This could show that living peas did more and faster respiration than the dead peas and paper balls.
  • The reason that only the living peas suck in the color, it’s because living things take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. In the experiment, the living peas did not give out the carbon dioxide because we use potassium hydroxide (KOH) to stop the carbon dioxide from coming out, so that we could show it clearly that the living peas really take in the oxygen, to know this, we could see from the color that sucking into the boiling tube.
  • From this experiment, I have learned that all the living things need respiration. They need to take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide. By doing the respiration, it help the living things to break down the glucose to get energy to supply their body.

Macromolecule

Macromolecule Carbohydrate Fats / Lipid Protein Nucleic acid

(DNA and RNA)

– to make protein (brown eyes since the DNA make proteins the reflect brown)

-the most important molecule

Property – mitochondria break down the carbohydrate (sugar link together) to release the sugar use for energy. – fats comes into the body, we either breakdown /release energy, or store it.

– lots of hydrocarbon bonds

– use protein to break the bond

– there are only 20 amino acid in the whole world.

– Break a fish protein and arrange it into any type of protein.

– break phosphoate diesther to make DNA

– you eat fish DNA, you rearrange DNA to make your own DNA

Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen

Carbon

  • Carbon has 4 valance bonds/electrons.
  • The energy required to make or break a bond is suitable for building molecules, which is stable and reactive.
  • It can build long complex molecule in any shapes, because it’s readily to other carbon atoms.
  • Element like silicon are in the same group as carbon and they have 4 valences electrons. It can be bonded to itself however it forms crystal lattices instead of long chains. It’s also highly stable so it can’t recombine with other elements as carbon can.
  • Carbon can take/give 1 2 3or4 electrons, it can react with anything.
  • Carbon can form any shapes with rings and chains to build things in life.
  • Carbon can form chains to build very long things (e.g. Veins, arteries, hair)
  • Shapes of chemicals is the most important things for a chemical to do their jobs.
  • Protein, fat, DNA, all based on carbon.
  • Can react with anything. It doesn’t mean that it’s reactive.

Hydrogen

  • Smallest atom in the universe, valance of one, we can sprinkle it over any molecule we want to fit the gaps of other molecule.
  • Hydrogen: paint on the outside. Carbon: glue of life.
  • Extremely reactive, great energy source, great way to transfer energy.
  • Tasteless, colorless (if it has color, we couldn’t see with our eyes since our eyes has water.)
  • Hydrogen is so small it doesn’t absorb anything.
  • It’s gas so it can diffuse.
  • It’s cohesive (2 things that are the same stick together, hydrogen stick to hydrogen)
  • Hydrogen bonds are the bonds formed when 2 things stick together.
  • Osmosis would not work without cohesive.

Oxygen

  • very good for releasing energy. (fire needs spark, fuel, and oxygen)
  • hydrogen, etc. can only release energy in the presence of oxygen.
  • Oxygen is toxic.
  • We use it for respiration because it is available, it’s all around us.
  • Tasteless, odorless
  • really low freezing and boiling point, it’s solute. (fish breath oxygen not water)

Properties of Water

Water is liquid at room temperature
  • Water helps us in the process of transportation (e.g. transports sugar, salt, etc. around our body)
  • Water is a lubricant so it provides protection against damage resulting from friction (e.g. tears protect our eyes from the rubbing of our eyelids. Water can also form a cushion around our organs, protecting it from trauma(physical injury))
Water has high specific heat capacity
  • Unlike metal, it takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of water. This is important since a huge part of the human body is made of water so our body won’t freeze or turn into ice in cold weather.
Water is a Cohesion (water molecules stick to water molecules)
  • When sun shines down on trees, water will evaporate from the leaves, cohesion will drag up new water from the roots to the leaves.
  • Surface tension- water allows materials to rest upon it if the surface tension is not broken (e.g. pollen dust and water insects can remain on the surface of the water.
Water is a universal solvent
  • A water molecule’s structure is polarity(meaning that the molecule has both negative and positive charge), this allows it to easily dissolve organic or inorganic molecules necessary to life (water dissolves sugar and salt into the human blood)
Water is an insulator
  • It takes a lot of energy to change the temperature of water so it can be used to keep people warm in harsh weather (e.g. wet suits)
  • Ice (which is less dense than water) floats on top of rivers and lakes in the cold winter; they insulate the water beneath them and keep it warm. This allows organisms living in the water to survive the cold winter.
Water is transparent
  • Water has no color so it sunlight can penetrate through it and allow photosynthesis to happen.
  • If water had color we won’t be able to see out of our eyes since our eyes are covered in water.
Water is adhesive(water molecules stick to non-water molecules)
  • When we sweat water sticks to our skin and cools it down. Also, we lose extra salt in our body when we sweat since sweat contains both water and salt.
Water can change into 3 states
  • At zero degrees Celsius water becomes solid, while at 100 degrees Celsius water becomes gas. Scientists have found life inside boiling water deep beneath the ocean. They also found life such as bacteria living within ice.
Echolocation( the location of an object located by sound)
  • Sound can be heard much louder in the water. Animals such as dolphins use echolocation to find food, communicate, etc. in the water.
Solid water turns white
  • Ice in the north and south poles are white. Many animals such as polar bears and seals use it to camouflage themselves.
Water is PH7 (neutral)
  • Water is neither acidic nor alkaline (Having a pH greater than 7)
