Cell Cycle

  • First part of every cell cycle(life) is growth(G1). Cells start to grow and grow until it reach the point “check point” where it tells the cells to stop growing. CHECKPOINT
  • Second is Synthesis (make DNA) NO CHECKPOINT
  • Third is G2 (make the protein to pull the DNA) CHECKPOINT
  • Next is Mitosis (split the DNA) CHECKPOINT
  • Last is Cytokinesis (split the cell) NO CHECKPOINT

Signal Transduction

  • Signal Transduction is about Communication.
  • Trans – to move across Duction – make something happens
  • signal transduction – information signal making something happen across the cell membrane.
  • Nothing travel across the cell membrane in the second messenger system.
  • Signal molecule are big molecule, can’t pass through cell membrane.
  • Ligand = something that bind a receptor protein to a cell membrane.

Receive news from the outside world

Mass communication (to large group of people) Individual communication (to 1 person)
1.Television – the sun shine on the UBC, and the UBC signal the television waves to the television, then it interpreted as an image which gives the illusion of movement for us to see.

Indirect

1.Friend – your friends might come to your house and tell you the news. This can be another way for you to receive outside world news.

Direct

2.Radio – electric charges rhythmically up and down its antenna sets the signal that is to be propagated in motion. These waves that are propagated carry signals that are received by antennae on your radio or television set.

Indirect

2.Phone – you can receive news from a phone call or a text. Phone is using radio waves in communicate as well.

Indirect

3.Internet – people are updating news and everything into the internet and many website. We can search for the information that we want to know in the internet.

Direct

3.Letter – you can receive news from the letter that someone send to you. Letter comes from a person who wrote a message in the paper and send to your address.

Indirect

4.Newspaper – you can receive news by reading newspaper. Newspaper comes from a company who works on getting and finding latest news for people to read everyday.

Direct

Cell communication

Mass communication – to a large group

  • direct
  • indirect

Individual communication – to only one

  • direct
  • indirect

(e.g. Phone is indirect. Info to phone, then to satellite, then to us.)

(e.g. Friend come to your house is direct.)

Nerves surround our most important part (e.g. Eyes )

When people step your foot, the pain is direct sent the message to the brain. Electricity is used to communicate between your foot and your brain.

Cell to Cell communication – one cell sends a message (plus ions) from one cell into another by passing through cell membranes by diffusion. (individual direct communication)

One cell to Many cell (mass indirect) – satellite TV

Hormones :

  • Hormones are signals that travels through the blood on their way to target cells.
  • Hormones do not pass through cell membranes.
  • Hormones are signals that get received by receptor (like UBC) hormones generally do not go inside our cells, it floats along and signals receptor tell nucleus what to do. (e.g. Testosterones travel to cheek cell and the receptors on the cells tell the nucleus to grow hair.)
  • types : 1. can send one signal to many cells

    2. each cell can have different response.

Mass direct : 5 senses communicate with our brain

when we walk our arm and legs coordinate to keep the balance. Synchronization of our body part

Mass to individual

  • our 5 senses communicate with our cells
  • body coordination (when we walk)
  • eyes

individual cell to individual cell

in cell to cell communication signal molecule diffuse across the cell membrane and deliver the message directly.

Cell communicate directly to other cells.

What would happen if there is no gap between the neuron?

  • things could communicate faster.
  • Neuron would have to use a lot of energy.
  • If one neuron couldn’t work it effect all the neuron.

Individual cell to individual cell communication in cell to cell communications signal molecules diffuse across the cell membrane and delivers the message directly

Membrane Protein

Membrane protein

membrane : selectively permeable (let something in and does not let something out)

membrane makes of phospholipid.

Hydrophilic: attracted to plus or minus (they are charged) (the head of phospholipids)

Let in

  • Elements and small molecule (because it’s small)
  • Light (light penetrates our cells, light gets in since it is beneficial to cells. we can’t stop light energy from getting in to the cell)
  • Virus (can get in though we do not want it to get in) viruses are specific to their host, and bird viruses are made for bird cells only.
  • Sound energy
  • Kinetic energy
  • Potential energy (every living things convert the first energy to potential energy and use potential energy)
  • Thermal energy

Keep out

  • Ion (ions are charged)
  • Lipid (membranes are made of lipids)
  • Proteins
  • Carbohydrates
  • Nucleic acids
  • Large molecule

Fact to remember

  • Small elements and molecules are small enough so that they can slip through the phospholipids and into the cell membrane.
  • Ion are charged (charges will interact with cell membranes, they will be repelled. Positive ion and positive cell membrane will repel)
  • Proteins are charged and are too big to get into a cell.
  • Macromolecule are too big to get into the cell.

*ION channel – use to get ion into the cell. Channel is a path way for ion. (protein make of this path) In the cell membrane we have protein shaped like cylinder, they provide a channel for ion to pass through. Ion channel have the gates to keep out the ion we don’t want out. If the glycoprotein realizes that there are good ions floating around, they will let it in. Though when ion channel open, it can let anything in and out; we can’t control it.

Sodium and Potassium Pump – it’s to clean up the mess that is made by the ion channel. We want Potassium (positive) in and Sodium (positive) out. Sodium potassium pump fixes or balances the 3 bad causes of the ion channel. 1.too much positive charge 2.too much sodium 3.too little potassium. When chemicals (3 sodiums) and ATP (energy) are added to the pump, the pump will change shape. When it changes shape (turns into a V), it turns negative and it attracts two potassium from the outside of the cell. When that happens, it turns the shape again and potassium goes inside (^) and it doesn’t require ATP. There are many pumps in the cell.

Carrier Protein It is a protein that carries big molecules across the membrane. It opens a little bit first, and then when the big molecule is in, it changes shape and the big molecule goes in. If it opens itself completely, then organelles or other viruses will come in.

Watching movie at home to in the theater

What do you like to do when you have free time? Some people like to go shopping, some people hang out with their friends, some go to the beach, or some might spend their time with family. People have different things they like to do. For me, I like to watch movie, and I think most people did the same too. Watching movie is one of the easiest ways to relax and have fun. It also had become a major entertainment in our society nowadays. Some people prefer to watch movie at home while some go to the movie theater. Some people also having hard time in choosing between the two places. Whether you are watching at home or in the theater, they both have pros and cons. Let’s see the similarity and difference between home and theater.

If you choose to watch movie at home, the pros are that you get to control the movie. You can pause anytime you want, such as when you need to go bathroom, or when you go to get some food in the kitchen. You can also rewind or fast forward the movie. But on the other hand, if you watch movie in the theater, you can’t do these things. You have no control on the movie, so whenever you need to go bathroom, there is a chance that you might miss some important parts of the movie. It’s also more relaxed and free when you are at home. You can lie down and watch, stretch your legs, or sit in any position you like. You can also discuss the movie without bothering anyone.  Watching movie at home can also improve your family relationship as well. You can talk, share, and comment things about the movie with your family, this may makes you understand each other more. The cons are you are more likely to end up with a messy room, because your sister or brother might spill the Coke or water on the sofa, or the floor might full with food and snack after eating. Another disadvantage of watching movie at home is the small size of screen and volume. Compare to the theater, it has better quality of sound and screen.

If you prefer to go to the movie theater, the pros are you will be surrounded with a brilliant and amazing atmosphere which could make you feel more excited than watching at home. It’s more interesting and fun in watching movie in the theater; you can see the film on a huge screen with a suitable volume for everyone, which might make you feel as if you are part of the story. This could also become an intensely memorable moment for you. Other than that, movie theater always have the newest and hottest film for you to watch, while DVD of movie Is usually release after the theater did. There is also the downside for watching movie in the theater. First is that you don’t get much privacy in theater. You have to respect other theatergoer around you. You are not allowing to talking loudly, calling or texting on your cell phone. And also it’s not like home where you can lie down and feel free as your want. In the theater, you have to sit properly to not disturb the person next, behind, or in front of you. Watching movie in the theater also cost you more on buying ticket and foods as well. Furthermore, you might have a risk on buying the ticket and being disappointed at the movie.

Although there are so many differences between them, they’re also having similarities. The similarities between them are you can always enjoy and have fun in watching movie no matter where you are. Watching movie either at home with your family or in the theater with your friends can both make you excited and happy.

In conclusion, the differences between watching movie at home and in the theater is that at home, you can get to control the movie; you can pause, rewind, or fast forward anytime you want. And it’s more comfortable and relaxes at home. While in the theater, you have to be aware of other theatergoer around you, but you could be more interested and excited in watching on the huge screen with brilliant atmosphere surrounded you. The contrast between these two is that both can make you enjoy and have fun. Whether watch at home or in the theater, they can both make you feel closer with your family, your friends, or the person who you watch the movie together. It could help you to build a strong relationship between you and your family or friends.
